Oz #19

Oz magazine was a countercultural publication founded in London in 1967 by Richard Neville, Felix Dennis, and Jim Anderson. Issue 19, published in 1969, emerged during the height of the magazine’s notoriety for its psychedelic aesthetic and aggressive anti-establishment stance. The issue served as a vehicle for underground art and radical political commentary, reflecting the tumultuous atmosphere of the late 1960s British youth movement.

The design of Oz magazine was heavily influenced by the work of artists like Robert Crumb and Martin Sharp, characterized by swirling typography, collage techniques, and provocative illustrations. Issue 19 continued this visual trend, employing a chaotic, multi-layered layout intended to subvert mainstream graphic design norms. Upon its release, the publication was frequently caught in the crosshairs of British authorities, leading to infamous obscenity trials that solidified the magazine's place as a lightning rod for debates surrounding censorship and artistic freedom.
