Peepshow #1

Peepshow #1, published in 1992, represents the debut of Joe Matt's seminal autobiographical comic series. Emerging from the underground comix tradition, the issue was released during a period when the medium was increasingly embracing self-reflective, slice-of-life narratives. Matt established his signature style early on, characterized by an obsessive, unflinching, and often self-deprecating examination of his own daily habits, interpersonal struggles, and professional anxieties.

The design and content of the issue were driven by Matt's commitment to radical honesty. By positioning himself as the primary subject, he helped define the 'confessional' subgenre of comics, influencing a generation of creators who sought to explore personal neurosis through a serialized, visual format. Upon its release, the work was noted by critics for its technical precision and the discomforting, yet darkly humorous, psychological transparency that would define Matt's career for the next two decades.
