Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #85

Published in December 1983, Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #85 serves as a significant chapter in the title's history during the early 1980s. This period was marked by an effort to differentiate the Spectacular title from the flagship Amazing Spider-Man book by focusing heavily on Peter Parker's personal life and internal struggles alongside his superhero duties. The story arc within this issue was crafted by writer Bill Mantlo, a prolific contributor to the Marvel universe during that era, with interior artwork by Al Milgrom, whose distinct style helped define the visual tone of the series for several years.

The issue is notable for its role in the broader continuity of the Spider-Man mythos, contributing to the character's development during a time of increased emotional complexity in Marvel storytelling. Al Milgrom’s designs emphasized the grit and street-level atmosphere of New York City, which became a staple of the Spectacular series. Upon its release, the issue was received as a standard but solid entry in the long-running series, praised by contemporary readers for maintaining the momentum of the character's ongoing narrative while highlighting the work of a creative team deeply embedded in the Marvel house style.
