Prince Valiant #2

Prince Valiant #2 is a key early installment in the long-running Sunday newspaper comic strip created by Hal Foster. Debuting in 1937, the strip was a masterclass in narrative illustration, characterized by Foster's lack of speech bubbles and his preference for intricate, detailed captions placed beneath the panels. The series was commissioned by William Randolph Hearst, who gave Foster the creative freedom to explore the Arthurian legend through a meticulously researched historical lens, blending adventure with a distinctively painterly aesthetic.

As the second issue in the collected reprints or serialized format, this item captures the formative period of Prince Valiant's journey from Thule to the court of King Arthur. Foster’s design philosophy emphasized realism and motion, drawing inspiration from medieval tapestries and traditional heroic literature. While early comic reprints often suffered from variable print quality, these editions were widely celebrated by contemporary readers and later scholars for establishing the high-fantasy comic genre as a sophisticated medium for visual storytelling.
