Qīlóngzhū #25

Qīlóngzhū, widely known internationally as Dragon Ball, is the seminal manga series created by Akira Toriyama. Issue #25 falls within the initial run published in Weekly Shōnen Jump during the mid-1980s. Toriyama drew inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, blending martial arts themes with comedic adventure, a stylistic pivot from his previous success with Dr. Slump. This issue represents the ongoing evolution of the series as it began to move away from pure comedy toward the more intense, action-oriented combat sequences that defined the later Shōnen genre.

The design and illustration of the volume reflect Toriyama's signature clean, kinetic style, characterized by expressive character silhouettes and dynamic, clear layouts. At the time of its release, the series was already cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon in Japan, bolstered by Toriyama's meticulous attention to mechanical design and world-building. Readers of the period were highly engaged by the expansion of the world's lore and the character development of the protagonist, Son Goku, which helped transition the series into one of the most influential works in manga history.
