Qīlóngzhū #29

Qīlóngzhū, known internationally as Dragon Ball, was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump starting in 1984, with issue #29 falling within the early chapters of the series. Created by Akira Toriyama, the work emerged during a period when the magazine was seeking a fresh take on the martial arts genre. Toriyama infused his narrative with a blend of Chinese folklore, specifically the classic novel Journey to the West, and contemporary humor, establishing a distinct visual language that would eventually define the shōnen manga aesthetic.

The design of the early chapters focused on a fluid, gag-oriented style that showcased Toriyama's background in character design and industrial aesthetics. As the series progressed, the artwork transitioned toward more kinetic action sequences, a shift that resonated deeply with the readership and turned the title into a cornerstone of the industry. This issue represents the foundational era of a series that would go on to become one of the most significant cultural exports in Japanese publishing history.
