Where it came from
Qǐshìlù Sì Qíshì, or 'Revelation of the Four Horsemen', emerged during the late 1990s as part of a localized wave of Chinese manhua that synthesized traditional wuxia storytelling with the visceral, high-octane aesthetic of Western dark fantasy and supernatural thriller comics. This series was conceptualized to explore apocalyptic themes through a lens of stylized martial arts, positioning its titular quartet as both saviors and harbingers in an increasingly chaotic modern setting.
The art style of the series is noted for its dramatic line work and cinematic framing, which were intentionally crafted to appeal to a demographic shifting toward more mature, gritty graphic literature. Issue #22 serves as a pivotal installment within the narrative arc, reflecting the series' trademark blend of metaphysical conflict and character-driven drama that solidified its place as a cult classic within its original market, even as its distribution remained largely confined to regional Chinese-language comics circles.
