Queen in Black #1

Released by Marvel Comics in December 2020, King in Black #1 serves as the centerpiece of a major crossover event written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Ryan Stegman. The narrative follows the arrival of Knull, the ancient god of the symbiotes, as he descends upon Earth to shroud the planet in darkness. This issue was conceived as the culmination of the long-running creative thread Cates established during his tenure on the Venom series, aiming to deliver a high-stakes, epic confrontation between the Marvel Universe's heroes and an existential cosmic threat.

The visual design of the series leans heavily into the dark, atmospheric aesthetic established by Stegman, utilizing a heavy ink style that emphasizes Knull’s void-like nature and the chaotic energy of the symbiote invasion. Upon its release, the issue was met with significant commercial interest, largely driven by the momentum of the preceding Venom run and the highly anticipated nature of the event. It received moderate critical praise for its ambition and kinetic pacing, functioning as a definitive showcase for the modern evolution of Marvel’s symbiote lore.
