Raul and His Vampire Prince #1

Raul and His Vampire Prince #1, published by Yaoi Press, arrived during the mid-2000s surge of English-language manga-inspired works. Created by artist Haruko Kurumatani, the series fits within the broader context of independent publishers seeking to satisfy the growing North American demand for boys' love comics. The story follows the title character, Raul, as he navigates the complex and often supernatural dynamics of his relationship with a vampire, blending gothic aesthetics with established tropes of the genre.

The design of the work reflects the stylistic leanings of its era, characterized by expressive character silhouettes and high-contrast ink work typical of self-published or small-press manga titles of that period. Critically, the series is noted for its role in the evolution of indie queer comics, representing a time when creators were experimenting with genre fusion. While it was produced for a niche audience, it remains a documented example of the experimental spirit prevalent in the independent manga scene during the mid-2000s.
