Where it came from
Richard Dragon, Kung Fu Fighter #1 was published by DC Comics in 1975, arriving at the height of the mid-1970s martial arts craze in American pop culture. The series was born out of a desire to capitalize on the success of films like Enter the Dragon and the popularity of the television series Kung Fu, blending standard comic book superhero tropes with the gritty, street-level martial arts genre.
The character was created by writer Dennis O'Neil and artist Jim Berry, though the first issue featured the artistic work of Leo Durañona. O'Neil, known for his socially conscious storytelling, crafted Richard Dragon as a complex protagonist with a dark past in international espionage. While the series was critically respected for its grounded tone and character-driven narrative, it ultimately lasted only 18 issues, serving as a distinct cultural artifact of 1970s genre experimentation.
