Richard Dragon #9

Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter debuted in 1975 during a decade defined by the massive cultural explosion of martial arts cinema in the West. DC Comics created the series to capitalize on this trend, blending traditional superhero tropes with the gritty, street-level realism of the era. The ninth issue, published in 1977, continues the series' established narrative of Richard Dragon navigating a world of international espionage, syndicates, and combat mastery, maintaining the character's status as a distinct departure from the caped crusaders of the time.

The issue features the creative work of writer Denny O'Neil, who was instrumental in grounding DC's stories in more contemporary, often social-conscious themes, and illustrator Ric Estrada. Their collaborative effort aimed to synthesize the kinetic energy of seventies action films with the structured storytelling of comic books. Upon release, the series was well-regarded for its unique tone and its role in broadening the diversity of the DC lineup, eventually becoming a cult classic among readers who appreciate the fusion of pulpy adventure and martial arts philosophy.
