Where it came from
Rom issue 16, published by Marvel Comics in March 1981, is part of the long-running series based on the 1979 Parker Brothers toy. The series was tasked with providing a narrative backbone for the electronic figure, transforming a simple static character into a tragic hero from the planet Galador who sacrificed his humanity to become a cyborg warrior fighting the alien Dire Wraiths on Earth.
The issue features script work by series writer Bill Mantlo and artwork by Sal Buscema, who provided the definitive look for the character throughout the comic's duration. The story follows the established tone of the series, which often blended space opera elements with a grounding in the Marvel Universe, helping Rom evolve into a cult favorite despite the inherent limitations of adapting a toy line.
