Rom Epic Collection: The Original Marvel Years #5

The Rom Epic Collection: The Original Marvel Years series was initiated by Marvel Comics to systematically reprint the entirety of the 1979-1986 Rom: Spaceknight run in a consistent, trade-paperback format. Volume 5 serves as a specific installment in this archival project, documenting the spaceknight’s mid-1980s storylines where he continued his war against the Dire Wraiths on Earth. This collection exists primarily to provide modern readers access to material that had been out of print for decades due to complex licensing agreements between Marvel and Hasbro.

The creative direction of the original source material was largely defined by writer Bill Mantlo and artists such as Steve Ditko and Sal Buscema. Their work on Rom sought to blend cosmic superhero tropes with darker, suburban science fiction elements, creating a unique tone that resonated deeply with readers of that era. The Epic Collection reprints are designed with modern archival standards in mind, ensuring the integrity of the original colors and line work are preserved for long-term collectors, reflecting the enduring cult status of a series once thought to be permanently lost to licensing limbo.
