Sagadawn: Etō Shinpei to Hizen no Yōkai #1

Sagadawn: Etō Shinpei to Hizen no Yōkai was developed as a collaborative multimedia project aimed at promoting the historical figures and cultural legacy of Saga Prefecture, Japan. The series centers on Etō Shinpei, a prominent Meiji-era statesman and lawyer, reinterpreting his life through the lens of local folklore and the supernatural. The manga is part of a broader regional revitalization initiative that utilizes narrative fiction to engage younger audiences with the history of the Hizen region.

The creative direction focuses on blending historical biography with elements of the yōkai fantasy genre to create an accessible, localized aesthetic. By casting historical political figures into supernatural scenarios, the authors intended to foster pride in Saga’s unique identity while providing a modern visual treatment of regional legends. It remains a notable example of Japanese local government efforts to leverage popular media for tourism and educational outreach.
