Scars #2

Scars #2, published in 2002 as part of a six-issue limited series, represents a notable entry in the crime-horror genre produced under the Avatar Press banner. Written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Jacen Burrows, the series was designed to explore the psychological toll of serial violence on law enforcement. The creators aimed for a gritty, unvarnished depiction of investigative exhaustion, distancing themselves from the more stylized tropes common in comic book police procedurals of the era.

The narrative follows Detective John Cain, a veteran who is deeply affected by the grim nature of the murders he investigates. Within the second issue, the collaboration between Ellis's sparse, clinical dialogue and Burrows's detailed, realistic linework serves to underscore the protagonist's growing detachment from his surroundings. Upon its release, the series was recognized by readers of mature-audience comics for its unflinching tone and its commitment to a singular, bleak aesthetic vision.
