Where it came from
Seirei no Moribito began as a celebrated fantasy novel series by Nahoko Uehashi, first published in 1996. The narrative follows Balsa, a spear-wielding bodyguard tasked with protecting a young prince imbued with a sacred water spirit. The story gained widespread acclaim for its meticulous world-building and its departure from typical genre tropes, focusing on cross-cultural diplomacy and the profound bond between its leads.
The adaptation into manga format, featuring illustrations by Yuu Sugawara, began serialization in 2007 to coincide with the heightened interest surrounding the production of an animated television series by Production I.G. This second volume continues the character-driven exploration of the original text, translating Uehashi's grounded prose into a visual medium that emphasizes fluid action and the atmospheric landscape of the fictional Yogo Empire.
