Sendou Yasugorou #1

Sendou Yasugorou debuted in the mid-1980s as a characteristic work of the gekiga genre, a style of Japanese comics defined by its serious, dramatic, and often gritty approach to storytelling. Created by the veteran manga artist Gosaku Ota, the series centers on the titular character, a fishing enthusiast whose adventures navigate the intersection of coastal life and human drama. It emerged during a period when niche professional manga were gaining traction for their ability to blend technical expertise with character-driven narratives.

Ota, already well-regarded for his adaptations of Go Nagai's giant robot sagas, brought a distinctively kinetic and expressive line style to this series. The design of the inaugural issue emphasizes the ruggedness of the protagonist, aiming to ground the reader in a world of labor and ocean-bound struggle. While the series did not achieve the widespread international reach of mainstream shonen titles, it remains a notable example of the auteur-driven storytelling that defined the breadth of the Japanese manga industry during the late Showa era.
