Shazam! #28

Shazam! #28, published by DC Comics in 1977, arrived during the tail end of the company's attempt to revive the Captain Marvel mythos throughout the 1970s. This series sought to recapture the whimsical, Golden Age spirit of the Fawcett Comics era, placing the superhero and his family back into the contemporary DC Universe. The issue reflects the editorial direction of the time, which frequently leaned into nostalgic storytelling while navigating the creative challenges of maintaining a lighthearted tone for a character whose origins were rooted in the 1940s.

The cover and interior art from this period often featured contributions from artists like C.C. Beck, who returned to the character he helped define, alongside other DC house artists who aimed to maintain visual continuity with the original aesthetic. While the series was met with a dedicated cult following, it faced commercial headwinds that ultimately led to its cancellation shortly after this issue, marking a transitional moment before the character would eventually be fully integrated into the broader DC continuity in the years that followed.
