Shōnenin Ushijima-kun #7

Shōnenin Ushijima-kun, written and illustrated by Shohei Manabe, began its serialization in Big Comic Spirits in 2004. The series serves as a gritty, unflinching examination of the Japanese debt industry, centered on the cold-blooded loan shark Kaoru Ushijima. Volume 7 continues the narrative arc of the series' signature dark realism, focusing on the psychological decay of those caught in the cycle of predatory lending and the societal underbelly of Tokyo.

Manabe’s design aesthetic is characterized by a stark, almost cinematic focus on the grotesque and the mundane, intentionally stripping away the polish often associated with the shōnen genre to highlight the brutality of his characters' choices. The seventh volume remains a significant entry in the series, reflecting the author’s commitment to exploring moral ambiguity and the consequences of desperation. It was received as a challenging, mature work, cementing Manabe's reputation for creating high-stakes drama that refuses to offer traditional redemption.
