Where it came from
Showcase #6 was published by DC Comics in early 1957 as part of their experimental anthology series designed to test the viability of new characters and concepts. During this period, DC frequently utilized Showcase to introduce revivals of older properties or entirely new hero archetypes, allowing editors to gauge reader interest through sales data before committing to a solo title.
This specific issue is notable for its features involving the Challengers of the Unknown, a team of adventurers created by legendary writer and artist Jack Kirby. Seeking to move away from the whimsical tone of the early Golden Age, Kirby introduced the group as survivors of a plane crash who operate with the knowledge that they are living on borrowed time, establishing a gritty, high-stakes aesthetic that would define his future work at DC and beyond.
