Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san: The Complete Omnibus #1

Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san began as a web manga series authored by the artist known as Honda, debuting in 2015. It was created as a semi-autobiographical account of the author's daily experiences working in a large Japanese bookstore, reflecting the often frantic, humorous, and deeply specific challenges of the retail industry. The series gained significant popularity for its meta-commentary on the publishing world and the unique perspective of a protagonist literally depicted as a skeleton, which serves as a visual metaphor for the exhaustion inherent in customer service.

The character design and minimalist aesthetic were crafted to emphasize the contrast between the macabre appearance of the staff and the mundane, sometimes absurdity-filled environment of a bookstore. The complete omnibus editions gather these vignettes into a singular narrative flow, which resonated with readers for its relatable depiction of workplace dynamics and passion for books. Upon its release in international markets, the series received praise for its dry wit and ability to humanize the often invisible labor of library and retail workers.
