Where it came from
Sonic the Hedgehog #42 was published by Archie Comics in December 1996 as part of the long-running series based on the Sega video game franchise. This era of the comic book was characterized by the 'Knuckles' spin-off series influence and the expansion of the Freedom Fighters' lore, often blending the established game characters with darker, serialized storytelling that had become a staple of the Archie run under writers like Ken Penders and Mike Gallagher.
The issue features artwork consistent with the house style of the mid-1990s Archie-Sonic era, emphasizing dynamic action panels and character designs adapted from the animated series. It remains a notable piece for collectors focusing on the Silver Age of the Archie run, representing a period when the comic was actively building its own distinct mythos separate from the source games, a creative choice that remains a point of historical discussion among fans of the franchise.
