Where it came from
Spawn #1 was released in May 1992 as the flagship title for Image Comics, a company founded by high-profile artists who defected from mainstream publishers to gain creative control and ownership of their work. Written and illustrated by Todd McFarlane, the comic introduced Al Simmons, a government assassin who makes a deal with a demon to return to life, setting the tone for the dark, gritty aesthetic that defined the independent comics movement of the early 1990s.
McFarlane’s design for the character, featuring heavy armor, flowing chains, and a distinctively tattered cape, was heavily influenced by his work on Spider-Man and his desire to blend traditional superhero tropes with gothic horror elements. The issue was an immediate commercial success, fueled by the industry’s speculation boom and the high profile of Image Comics’ founders, and it remains a quintessential artifact of the creator-owned comic book era.
