Spitfire and the Troubleshooters was launched by Marvel Comics in 1986 as part of its New Universe imprint, a line envisioned by editor-in-chief Jim Shooter to exist in a grounded, realistic continuity separate from the primary Marvel Universe. The series follows Jenny Swenson, an engineering professor who gains superpowers through a mysterious suit of armor, and her attempts to manage her academic career alongside high-stakes heroism. It was designed to explore the intersection of technology and personal responsibility in a world where superpowers appeared suddenly and without precedent.

The eighth issue arrived during the series' struggle to find a consistent creative identity, as the New Universe titles faced significant skepticism from long-time readers and critics who found the line's grim, realistic tone a departure from traditional superhero tropes. Like much of the series, the art and storytelling aimed for a grounded, serialized television aesthetic, yet the title suffered from low visibility and shifting editorial direction. The issue remains a minor historical artifact of a bold, ambitious, and ultimately short-lived experiment in comic book publishing.
