Where it came from
Released in 1999 as the conclusion to the six-issue limited series By the Emperor's Hand, this comic was published by Dark Horse Comics during their tenure holding the Star Wars license. It serves as a foundational text for Mara Jade, a character originally created by Timothy Zahn for his 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, providing an official origin story for the fan-favorite character who operated as the Emperor's personal assassin before the events of the original film trilogy.
The issue features writing by Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole, with interior artwork by Carlos Ezquerra. The creative team aimed to bridge the gap between Jade's ruthless past in the Imperial service and her eventual redemption, utilizing a gritty, noir-inspired aesthetic that reflected her morally ambiguous role. Upon release, the series was well-received by fans of the Expanded Universe for its character depth and for clarifying the mysterious history of a character who had become a cornerstone of the post-Return of the Jedi literary landscape.
