Where it came from
SubHuman was a limited comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics under their Comics Greatest World imprint during the mid-1990s. The series was conceptualized as part of a shared superhero universe, exploring themes of mutation, societal displacement, and the dark underbelly of a world populated by extraordinary beings. It sought to provide a grittier, more mature counterpoint to the traditional superhero narratives dominant at the time.
The creative direction for the series focused on a kinetic, high-contrast aesthetic that mirrored the psychological instability of its protagonists. While the series did not reach the mainstream cultural saturation of other titles in the Dark Horse catalog, it remains a notable artifact for fans of 1990s independent-style superhero experimentation, representing the experimental spirit of the era's comic publishing landscape.
