Supreme Power #17

Supreme Power #17, published in 2005, represents a significant installment in the mature-reader Marvel MAX series written by J. Michael Straczynski. The series was designed as a sophisticated, deconstructive reimagining of the classic Squadron Supreme characters, exploring how superpowered beings might exist in a realistic, cynical modern political landscape. This issue serves as a pivotal point in the 'High Command' story arc, further developing the darker themes and character arcs that distinguished the series from traditional superhero fare.

The visual identity of this issue reflects the grittier aesthetic mandated for the MAX imprint, with art by Gary Frank. Frank, known for his polished and grounded illustrative style, aimed to bridge the gap between classic superhero dynamism and the psychological realism inherent in the script. The series was generally well-received for its ambitious scope and its departure from standard comic tropes, though its heavy tone and departure from traditional continuity often positioned it as a cult favorite rather than a mainstream cornerstone.
