Tales of the Unexpected #85

Published by DC Comics in 1964, Tales of the Unexpected #85 arrived during the mid-period of the Silver Age of comic books. The title was a long-running anthology series known for featuring science fiction, fantasy, and supernatural tales, often leaning into the imaginative and sometimes bizarre themes that defined DC's science fiction output during this decade. Like many issues of the series, this installment served as a showcase for various creative talents to experiment with anthology-style storytelling rather than long-term character arcs.

The interior art and narratives were the product of the reliable house style at DC, which prioritized clean, punchy visuals intended for a broad newsstand audience. During this era, the creative direction was overseen by editor Julius Schwartz, whose influence was pivotal in steering the company's supernatural and sci-fi titles toward a more sophisticated, imaginative tone. While not as historically seismic as the company's superhero crossovers, the issue represents the mid-century tradition of pulp-inspired storytelling that characterized the era's diverse comic book market.
