Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of a three-issue limited series published by Dark Horse Comics, this title sought to modernize Edgar Rice Burroughs' iconic jungle hero for a late-nineties audience. The story, written by Howard Chaykin with art by Graham Nolan, fits into a broader tradition of licensed Tarzan interpretations that sought to blend the classic pulp aesthetic of the original novels with contemporary comic book storytelling techniques.
The creative team aimed to maintain the visceral, adventurous tone established by Burroughs while utilizing the sharper, more dynamic visual language prevalent in the comic industry at the time. The series was met with modest interest from long-term fans of the character who appreciated the return to a serialized format, though it remains a niche entry within the vast catalog of Tarzan adaptations produced over the last century.
