Lore

Why it matters

Published in 1980, this issue features Spider-Man battling the villain Hydro-Man, whose ability to transform his body into water presented a unique creative challenge for the series' artists. Provenance

Where it came from

The Amazing Spider-Man issue 208 was published in September 1980 by Marvel Comics during a transitional period for the title. This issue continues the long-running narrative of Peter Parker, written by Denny O'Neil with interior art provided by John Romita Jr., whose early work on the series helped define the visual tone of the character during the transition from the 1970s to the 1980s.

The story features Spider-Man battling the character Hydro-Man, who makes his debut in this issue. The design of Hydro-Man was intended to provide a elemental antagonist that challenged Spider-Man's agility, and the issue remains a notable point of interest for collectors as the first appearance of this recurring villain.
