The Authority: More Kev #1

The Authority: More Kev #1 was published in 2004 by WildStorm, an imprint of DC Comics, as a direct sequel to the 2002 miniseries Kev. The narrative follows Kev Hawkins, a cynical British mercenary, after his involuntary recruitment into the ranks of The Authority. The series was written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Carlos Ezquerra, a duo renowned for their work on 2000 AD and Judge Dredd. Ennis utilized the story to lean into his signature blend of dark, irreverent humor and hyper-violent satire, juxtaposing a grounded, gritty protagonist against the cosmic, god-like power scales typical of The Authority's mainline appearances.

The design and tone of the series were deeply informed by Ennis's desire to strip away the superhero grandeur of the core team by placing them in the path of a man who viewed their altruism with utter contempt. Carlos Ezquerra’s distinct, heavy-lined artistic style provided a stark aesthetic shift from the sleek, high-gloss imagery of previous Authority runs, opting instead for a rougher, more grounded look. Upon release, the issue was received as a polarizing but quintessential example of Ennis’s deconstructive approach to the medium, appealing to readers who favored cynical, character-driven subversion over traditional heroic narratives.
