The Brave and the Bold #122

The Brave and the Bold #122, released in October 1975, represents a quintessential era of DC Comics’ team-up anthology series. During this period, the title was defined by the long-running creative partnership of writer Bob Haney and artist Jim Aparo, whose collaborative style focused on high-stakes, fast-paced narratives. This issue features a pairing of Batman and the Phantom Stranger, a combination that leaned into the gothic and supernatural elements that permeated DC’s storytelling in the mid-1970s.

Jim Aparo’s art is particularly notable for its dynamic layouts and shadowed, atmospheric portrayals of Gotham City. His work on this series helped solidify Batman's status as a versatile detective capable of traversing both gritty crime drama and cosmic horror. The issue was received as a standard but quintessential example of Bronze Age comic craft, favored by readers for its self-contained plots and the frequent, often unexpected, guest stars that Haney utilized to expand the reach of the Batman mythos.
