The Brave and the Bold #166

The Brave and the Bold #166, published by DC Comics in September 1980, serves as a notable entry in a series long defined by its team-up format. During this period, the title was primarily utilized to pair Batman with various characters across the DC Universe, often providing a testing ground for lesser-known heroes or unconventional narrative pairings. This specific issue features a team-up between Batman and the Martian Manhunter, a pairing that reflects the editorial trend of highlighting the Justice League's foundational members against more grounded or atmospheric threats.

The issue was written by Mike W. Barr with art by Jim Aparo, a definitive Batman artist whose work on The Brave and the Bold is highly regarded for its fluid action and distinct character rendering. The design of the cover and interior panels emphasizes the atmospheric tension characteristic of Aparo's tenure, focusing on the dynamic between the terrestrial detective and the extraterrestrial power of J'onn J'onzz. It remains a sought-after piece for collectors of the late Bronze Age, prized for the creative synergy between Barr's scripting and Aparo's iconic visual style.
