The Brave and the Bold #172

The Brave and the Bold #172, published in March 1981, arrived during the final years of the title's long-running team-up format. By this period, the series had evolved into a showcase for unconventional pairings, frequently utilizing the creative talents of writer Mike W. Barr and artist Jim Aparo to explore the darker, more street-level corners of the DC Universe. This specific issue features Batman teaming up with the Huntress, a character whose complex origins and vigilante persona provided a gritty counterpoint to the traditional superhero team-up.

Jim Aparo's contribution to this issue is emblematic of his celebrated tenure on Batman titles, characterized by his fluid, kinetic line work and dynamic layouts that emphasized mood and atmosphere. The cover and interior art reflect the house style of the early 1980s, balancing the transition between the campier sensibilities of the past and the emerging 'grim and gritty' era of comics. At the time of its release, the issue was received as a standard but high-quality installment in a reliable monthly series, valued by readers for the consistent chemistry between the title's recurring leads and the guest stars.
