Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in 1959, The Brave and the Bold #23 is a significant installment in the Silver Age of comic books. During this era, DC experimented with anthology formats to test new characters and team dynamics before committing to full-length series. This specific issue is historically notable for featuring the Viking Prince, a recurring character created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert that emphasized historical adventure within the DC landscape.
The art and narrative direction of the series were heavily influenced by the editorial transition toward more dynamic, high-stakes storytelling. Joe Kubert, renowned for his visceral and textured illustration style, brought a sense of realism and kinetic energy to the Viking Prince stories. The title was well-received by collectors and readers for its consistent artistic quality, eventually serving as the foundational platform that would later launch major team-up titles like the Justice League of America.
