Where it came from
The Brave and the Bold #72 was published by DC Comics in 1967 during a period of transition for the series. Originally an anthology title, the book had begun to focus on team-ups, largely serving as a showcase for Batman to partner with other characters in the DC Universe. This specific issue features Batman teaming up with the Spectre, a supernatural character that had recently been revived to appeal to readers interested in more atmospheric and macabre storytelling.
The issue was illustrated by Neal Adams, who was beginning to make a significant impact on the comic book industry with his dynamic, realistic approach to human anatomy and perspective. His work on this issue is frequently cited by historians for helping to move the character of Batman away from the campier tone of the 1960s television show and toward the darker, more grounded detective figure that would define the character in the following decade.
