The Defenders #101

The Defenders #101, released in November 1981, arrived during a transformative era for the series. Following the departure of long-time writer David Kraft, J.M. DeMatteis took over the helm, steering the team away from the 'non-team' ensemble format toward a more cohesive, character-driven narrative. This issue specifically served as a bridge between ongoing arcs, maintaining the title's reputation for unconventional, often surrealist superhero storytelling that separated it from Marvel's more traditional team books like The Avengers.

The cover and interior art from this period reflect the influence of artists like Don Perlin, who provided a gritty, detailed aesthetic that defined the visual identity of the Defenders throughout the early 1980s. Perlin’s work was noted for its ability to balance the chaotic, mystical elements of the team’s adventures with grounded character interactions. Reception of this era was generally positive among readers who appreciated the series' willingness to explore darker, more psychological themes that were less common in mainstream comics of the time.
