The Defenders #105

The Defenders #105, published in March 1982, arrived during a transitional period for the series as it moved toward a more ensemble-focused narrative under the direction of writer J.M. DeMatteis. This issue represents a mid-run entry that emphasizes the eclectic, often supernatural nature of the group, which served as a distinct alternative to more mainstream superhero teams like the Avengers or the X-Men.

The cover and interior art from this era reflected the shifting aesthetic of early 1980s Marvel, characterized by detailed line work and a focus on the moody, introspective character arcs that defined DeMatteis's tenure on the title. While not as historically significant as the early appearances of the team in the 1970s, issue #105 is recognized by collectors as a quintessential piece of the mid-1980s Defenders mythos, capturing the balance between high-stakes cosmic conflict and the interpersonal tension that kept the series distinct.
