The Defenders #51

The Defenders #51, published by Marvel Comics in September 1977, arrived during a period of transition for the titular super-group. As the series evolved from its original premise as a loose assembly of outsiders, this era reflected the broader trends in 1970s Marvel storytelling, which frequently balanced cosmic threats with grounded character development and team-based interpersonal dynamics.

The issue features work by writer David Anthony Kraft and artist Keith Giffen. Giffen, whose distinctively angular and dynamic illustration style would later influence a generation of comic artists, was tasked with maintaining the momentum of the series as it navigated the late-seventies shift toward more serialized narratives. The title was received at the time as a reliable outlet for unconventional storytelling, standing apart from the more rigid team structures of the Avengers or the Fantastic Four.
