Where it came from
The Defenders #96, published by Marvel Comics in June 1981, arrived during a transitional era for the series as it moved toward a more fluid roster of characters. Written by J.M. DeMatteis with interior art by Don Perlin, the issue is part of a run that emphasized the offbeat, unconventional dynamic of the group, distancing them from the more traditional structure of the Avengers.
The cover, illustrated by Joe Staton, reflects the vibrant, high-contrast aesthetic typical of bronze-age Marvel titles, focusing on the team's ongoing struggle to balance their individual personalities against external cosmic or supernatural threats. The issue is noted by collectors for its role in the overarching narratives penned by DeMatteis, which helped define the team's identity as a 'non-team' that stood apart from mainstream superhero tropes of the period.
