Where it came from
The Dreaming #5 was published in 1996 as part of the Vertigo imprint under DC Comics. The series served as a direct spin-off of Neil Gaiman's seminal The Sandman, focusing on the realm of the same name and the inhabitants left behind following the conclusion of Morpheus's tenure. This specific issue, titled 'The Lost Girls,' was written by Caitlin R. Kiernan with artwork by Dave McKean and Peter Doherty, continuing the series' commitment to dark, surrealist fantasy.
The creative direction for this series aimed to maintain the atmospheric, literary quality of Gaiman's original work while allowing individual writers to explore the distinct psyches of characters like Cain, Abel, and Eve. Dave McKean's cover art for this issue utilized his signature mixed-media style, blending photography and illustration to evoke an ethereal, unsettling quality. It was generally well-received by fans of the Vertigo era for successfully expanding the lore of the Dreaming without losing the thematic weight of its predecessor.
