The Flash #289

Published by DC Comics in September 1980, The Flash #289 represents a mid-run entry during the Bronze Age of comic books. At this time, the series was navigating the transition from the legacy-heavy storytelling of the mid-seventies toward the more experimental narratives that defined the early eighties. The issue features the work of writer Cary Bates and artist Carmine Infantino, a legendary pairing in the Flash's history, as they continued to navigate the complex personal and professional life of Barry Allen.

The creative direction of this era focused heavily on balancing classic superhero conflict with the developing interpersonal dramas of the Central City supporting cast. Carmine Infantino, who was instrumental in defining the Flash's visual identity since the character's Silver Age revival, brought a clean, kinetic style to the page that prioritized clear storytelling. Like much of the series during this period, the issue was received as a reliable installment for regular readers, serving as a functional piece of a long-form serial narrative that explored the mounting tensions facing the Scarlet Speedster.
