The H.A.R.D. Corps #1

The H.A.R.D. Corps #1, released in 1992, was a cornerstone of the Valiant Comics expansion during the early 1990s. As a spin-off of the popular Harbinger series, the title centered on a team of government-controlled mercenaries whose powers were regulated by cybernetic implants. The series capitalized on the era's fascination with gritty, high-tech tactical narratives, positioning itself as a more cynical and militaristic counterpart to the super-powered idealism found in other Valiant titles of the time.

The creative team for this inaugural issue included writer David Michelinie and artist Bob Layton, both of whom were instrumental in shaping the early Valiant universe. Their approach focused on the psychological toll of the characters' servitude and the technological limitations of their equipment. The issue is noted for its distinctive visual style and the clever integration of the 'Harbinger' lore into a fresh, action-oriented format, which helped establish it as a significant milestone for readers looking for continuity-heavy shared universes.
