Where it came from
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies began as a web manga series written and illustrated by Cocoa Fujiwara, serialized on the Gangan Pixiv platform starting in 2019. The narrative centers on the ironic, high-stakes romance between a heroic magical girl and an evil lieutenant of an invading army, blending comedic tropes of the mahou shoujo genre with a workplace romantic comedy aesthetic.
Following Fujiwara's passing in 2020, the series was left incomplete, but the first volume, collecting the initial chapters of this charming and melancholic series, was published by Square Enix. The character designs lean into exaggerated, expressive anime stylings that contrast the whimsical nature of the magical girl transformation with the bureaucratic, mundane reality of the villain's command structure, and the work has been well-regarded by readers for its poignant blend of humor and underlying emotional weight.
