The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Seen #2

The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Seen is a self-published zine series created by the artist and illustrator Venus DeMars. Issue number two continues the project's exploration of personal vulnerability, identity, and the performative nature of daily existence. The series emerged from a DIY ethos, typical of the independent zine movement, which prioritizes intimate, unfiltered expression over mass-market publication standards.

The design of the issue favors a minimalist and evocative aesthetic, utilizing simple line work and hand-lettered text to mirror the raw honesty of the writing. By stripping away complex graphic art, the focus is placed entirely on the narrative voice of the author. Upon its release within underground art and queer literature circles, the series was received as a candid look at the challenges of navigating social visibility and the anxieties associated with being perceived by others.
