Where it came from
The New Guardians #1 was published in 1988 as a spin-off from the Millennium crossover event. Written by Steve Englehart and illustrated by Joe Staton, the series was created to explore a group of diverse, multinational super-powered individuals chosen by the Guardians of the Universe to usher in a new era of human evolution. DC Comics aimed for this title to address social and environmental themes prevalent in late eighties discourse.
The series is perhaps best known for its unconventional character designs and an attempt to tackle contemporary issues like the AIDS epidemic and environmental destruction. Despite these ambitious goals, the book was met with critical skepticism and is often cited by comic historians as an example of a series that struggled to find a cohesive tone. Its legacy remains tied to the bold, experimental editorial direction DC took during that specific period of the late eighties.
