Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in 1986, The New Mutants #39 was a pivotal issue in the series written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Mary Wilshire. Emerging during a period of high creativity for the X-Men franchise, this issue served as a narrative bridge during a darker, more transitional phase for the team, focusing on the psychological toll of their training and the shifting dynamics between the young mutants and their mentor, Magneto.
The issue is noted for its character-driven storytelling, a hallmark of Claremont’s tenure on the X-Men titles. Mary Wilshire’s pencil work provided a distinct, fluid aesthetic that contrasted with the more rigid house styles of the era, emphasizing the internal struggles of characters like Dani Moonstar and Rahne Sinclair. At the time of its release, the comic was received as an essential character study that expanded the depth of the New Mutants beyond standard superhero action tropes.
