Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in June 1987, The New Mutants #52 arrived during a transitional period for the title, as writer Chris Claremont continued to steer the young team through increasingly dark and complex narratives. This issue features cover art by Rick Leonardi and marks a point in the series where the characters were frequently grappling with the moral ambiguities of their mentors, the X-Men, and the trauma inherent in their training as soldiers.
The interior art was provided by Rick Leonardi, whose distinct, elongated style brought a kinetic energy to the New Mutants’ adventures. At the time of its release, the issue was received as a standard entry in the ongoing development of the team’s roster, serving as a bridge between larger cosmic arcs and the interpersonal drama that defined Claremont’s tenure on the franchise.
