The New Mutants Annual #4

The New Mutants Annual #4, published in 1988, serves as a significant chapter in the 'Evolutionary War' crossover event that spanned several Marvel Annuals that summer. Written by Chris Claremont with art by June Brigman and Roy Richardson, the issue continues the development of the teenage mutant team, placing them in the midst of the High Evolutionary's global quest to reshape genetics. The narrative serves both as a self-contained story within the crossover and as a bridge for the ongoing character arcs defining the late-eighties X-Men line.

The design and artistic direction of this annual reflect the house style of Marvel in the late 1980s, prioritizing dynamic character interplay and the integration of larger editorial mandates. By utilizing a rotating roster of creators for the annuals, Marvel aimed to maintain continuity across titles while allowing readers to experience different visual interpretations of the core cast. The issue is remembered by collectors for its contribution to the era’s complex, interconnected storytelling style that defined the mutant-centric comics of that decade.
