Where it came from
The Original Shield #2 was published in early 1940 by MLJ Magazines, which would later become known as Archie Comics. This issue continued the adventures of the Shield, a patriotic superhero created by writer Harry Shorten and artist Irv Novick. Debuting in the pages of Pep Comics #1 just months prior, the character was conceived as the first major costumed hero to use the American flag as a central visual motif, predating Captain America's arrival by several months.
The design of the character was a deliberate attempt to capture the growing nationalistic fervor in the United States on the eve of World War II. By centering the hero's aesthetic around the stars and stripes, Shorten and Novick tapped into a powerful icon of public identity. While the Golden Age of comics was a crowded marketplace, the Shield secured a dedicated readership, establishing a template for the archetypal patriotic superhero that would become a staple of the medium for decades to come.
